brainstem
The brainstem connects the brain and the spinal cord. Sometimes it is described as the lowest part of the brain (often described as a "lower extension") and sometimes it is regarded as the "cap" or highest point of the spinal cord.
In essence, the brainstem is the gateway between automatic reflex (the spinal chord) and higher processing.
